Welcome to Frenchburg, Kentucky
Nestled in the rolling hills of Eastern Kentucky, Frenchburg is a small community rich in history, natural beauty, and Appalachian heritage. Founded in 1869 as the county seat of Menifee County and officially incorporated in 1871, Frenchburg was named in honor of Judge Richard French, a respected local attorney and public servant.
For more than 150 years, Frenchburg has served as the main hub of Menifee County — a place where tradition, resilience, and community pride continue to thrive.
A Town Built on Resilience
Frenchburg’s history is marked by determination and perseverance. In 1882, a devastating flood along Beaver Creek damaged much of the town, but the resilient residents rebuilt and continued to grow stronger.
In the early 1900s, Presbyterian missionaries led by Dr. Edward O. Guerrant founded the historic Frenchburg School Campus. The campus included a boarding school and hospital that served families from across Eastern Kentucky for generations and helped shape the region’s educational history.
Today, many of those historic roots remain visible throughout the community.
